VOLUNTEER UPDATE FOR THIS WEEKEND
Thank you for your commitment to the Gardens of Vernon Township. We have an updated schedule for our double duty weed wrangle and tree/shrub planting this weekend. There are a lot of conflicting events this weekend so if you have any time to participate, please do come. One hour? Two hours? Five hours? Whatever works for you. Please read below for details.

Check In (SAT 9a-2p, SUN 9a -?). We will have a check in table at the front of 602 Vitality from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. There will be a tracking sheet and sign off person for those needing to track specific hours of service. We will also assign you to project teams, have you sign a waiver and give you a safety briefing. There will be food and drinks. We will supply lunch for those working all day.

Tree/Shrub Planting (SAT 9a-3p, SUN 9-?). We received an Ag grant from the Community Foundation of Hancock County and we were able to purchase 67 tree/shrub starts. We will receive them on Friday and need to get them all planted over the weekend. We will have a planting plan from the landscape designer and we will have marked stakes throughout the property to show exact locations to dig. We’ve asked Ruby Northcutt to serve as our team leader to ensure planting is done correctly (e.g. roots, depth, watering).

Weed Wrangle (SAT 10a – Noon). Patrick McCartney will lead the Weed Wrangle to help eliminate the honeysuckle bush and callary pear trees on the garden property . Please bring work gloves, loppers or small handsaws if you have them. We will have teams with sectors for cutting, applying herbicide and dragging bushes to collection point.

Our volunteers are coming from many sources including Garden Volunteers, Master Gardeners, Scouts, Mt Vernon Honor Society, Business people and members of the Community. Please feel free to bring friends, family and colleagues to assist. Our hope is to get everything completed on Saturday (but Sunday morning is also a real possibility if we don’t have enough people on Saturday).

Initiative: Gardens of Vernon Township Weed Wrangle and Tree Planting

We will be set up at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28th in front of the Township Office at 602 Vitality Drive. We just found out that we will be receiving 65 + trees and shrubs to plant over the weekend. We will need a lot of help to get everything done this coming weekend.
